The Office of Recorder was the first Constitutional Office in County Government. Oldest records date back to the late 1700's and include the Original Grant Book of George Rogers Clark.

Your Recorder and staff consider it our primary duty to serve you, the public, with outstanding, professional and friendly service.

Duties of the Recorder include:

  • Record any instruments submitted for recording, providing it meets essential requirements.
  • Record Deeds, Mortgages, Assignments, Releases, Power of Attorney, Real Estate Contracts, Annexations, Trustees Elections, Affidavits, Final Decrees, Surveys, Federal Tax Liens, Mechanics Liens, Military Discharges, Articles of Incorporation, Cemetery Deeds, Bonds, Plats, Condominiums, Assumed Business Name Certificates, Delinquent Sewer Liens, Leases and Miscellaneous Instruments.
  • File Uniform Commercial Codes
  • Provide Copies of any Instrument and Certify to those recorded upon request. (Fee charged)

Essential Recording Requirements:

  • Acknowledgements to entitle any conveyance, mortgage or instrument of writing to be recorded.
  • Legible names typed or printed under each signature exactly as signed.
  • Name of person preparing the Instrument for each document effecting real estate.
  • All documents require signature of Notary Public and Notarized Documents require County of residence of Notary and Commission Expiration.
  • Transfer of Deeds for Taxation: Endorsement by Auditor before recording.
  • Release of Satisfaction of Liens: May be President, Vice-President, Cashier, Secretary, Treasurer, General Manager or Attorney in Fact only.
  • Per I.C. 36-2-7-10 (B)(11), the county legislative body has enacted an Ordinance to establish a supplemental fee of $3.00 to record a single document, $5.00 from each Deed goes to the Surveyor's Perpetuation Fund.
