Elkhart County Governor's Award

Beginning October, November and December 1999, and continuing through the first nine months of 2000 for a total of twelve consecutive months, the solid waste management district of Elkhart County has achieved a recycling rate of a minimum of 50% or more.  This qualifies Elkhart County and the solid waste management district to be eligible for consideration for the distinguished Governor's Recycling Award, (50% Achievement Category). Presently, Elkhart County is the first and only solid waste district in Indiana to achieve such a high recycling rate for a period of twelve consecutive months.

Although some Indiana cities are recycling at 50%, the local solid waste district was the first district out of 62 in the state to recycle for twelve consecutive months at a minimum of 50%.  The twelve consecutive months equals over 400,000 tons of material which will be used as various products, thus diverted from the two landfills in Elkhart County. The largest volume of recycling is coming from industry which has made an enormous contribution towards recycling in this county. Included in recycling figures are also residential, household hazardous waste, office and schools. Solid waste management districts are the records keepers of recycling activities throughout the state.

The solid waste management district won the Governor's Award for Excellence in Recycling in May 2001 which recognized Elkhart County for achieving a minimum of 50% waste diversion for twelve consecutive months through aggressive source reduction and recycling.  The presentation was made in Merrillville, Indiana at the annual Indiana Recycling Coalition Conference. A review committee representing industry, academia, government and environmental organizations evaluated Elkhart County's accomplishments.

Land filling has experienced a gradual decrease nationwide in the last ten years with recycling leveling off rate approximately 30% - - - Indiana is at approximately 33%. Waste-to-energy activities nationally are around 18%, however, Indiana does not recognize waste-to-energy as a form of diversion towards ultimate recycling goals. Elkhart County also surpassed the state recycling goal in 1996 of 35%, making it amongst the few in the state to do so.
