Hancock County Clerk's Office
Linda Grass Phone: 317-462-1109 Marriage Licenses: To apply here for your marriage license, either the bride or the groom must be a legal resident of Hancock County. Of if both bride and groom live out of state, they apply here only if they are getting married in Hancock County. Both bride and groom must be 18 years of age. For the bride under age of 50, she needs a form signed by her doctor, called a "Premarital Exam Certificate" to bring with her when she applies. Your doctor should have the form. Both bride and groom need to come in together. Each need their birth certificates, the originals or a CERTIFIED copy from the county where they were born. If the birth certificate does not give their parents' full names, where they were born, and the mother's maiden name, the applicants will need to provide that information. When applying, the bride and groom need to be in our office no less than 20 minutes before we close - - it takes about that long to complete. The marriage license is valid for 60 days. There is no waiting period. The couple will leave with all the necessary paperwork. A wedding ceremony may be performed by a licensed minister, the Mayor of Greenfield, a Clerk-Treasurer of one of our towns, the County Clerk, or a judge. You must call and make an appointment with them to perform the wedding. For a bride or groom under the age of 18, call our office at (317) 462-1109 and ask for the Marriage Applications Clerk to find out the requirements.
