Hancock County, Indiana
Named for John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence

Hancock County was organized as a new county in the spring of 1828 and was named for John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.  The current courthouse, which is the county's fourth, was built in 1896-1897 and was ready for use January 1, 1898.  The total cost of the building was $242,600.
