Agency Head Office: 812-738-8415
Description of Business:
The District is a recycling and environmental education organization funded through county taxes. If you need information about a local place to take trash, please call Waste Management, Inc.
Recycling Services:
The district's main operation is five drop-off recycling centers for residential use.  Their purpose is to divert household recyclables from permanent disposal.  The centers are located in:
  • Corydon - across from Hurst Lumber in the parking lot of May and Joe Rhoads Pool.
  • Elizabeth - the parking lot of South Central Elementary School on Hwy 11
  • Lanesville - off Mocking Bird Drive on the Jaycees property (near Gresham Park)
  • Mauckport - at Kingsley's General Store on Squire Boone Road
  • Palmyra - on Hwy 150 (the old DOT scale station) near Buffalo Trace Park.
Center hours are:  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm
During operating hours a district employee will be on-site to help you with your materials.  Please do not leave recyclables when the centers are closed.  Dumped materials make a big mess.
The centers collect the following materials:
  • Aluminum beverage cans
  • Clear, brown or green glass bottles or jars
  • Plastics, Number 1 and Number 2
  • Newspapers and their inserts
  • Steel/tin cans
  • Cardboard and paperboard
  • Magazines
  • Household batteries
Other Services -
The district office is located in the County Court House on the first floor.
The office provides educational opportunities to schools and to the public on a variety of environmental topics.  Sample of hands-on presentations include "How to Build a Worm Bin" for first to third graders, "Resource Management" for high schoolers, and "What's in Our Trash?" for an adult meeting.  Call our office if you want an environmental presentation customized for your class or organization.
Schools have an important role in environmental education.  The district sponsors a newsletter, "Trash Talk", for fourth to sixth graders throughout the county.  An environmental grant program is open for county teachers for environmental projects.  Each project can receive up to $1,000.  Call us for details.  We have a number of environmental education resources that are available for teachers to borrow.  Each school should have our catalog.
We sponsor the county's own "Adopt a County Road" program for concerned citizens who want to maintain the beauty of their section of county road.
The district also provides for special collections at certain times during the year.  Collections are usually held for telephone books and tires.  Check out our events calendar for news of what will be collected, where and when.
The environment has its own holidays, namely Earth Day and America Recycles Day.  Check our notices or events for information about these special days.
Look for our booth at the Harrison County Fair.  You could learn something about the environment, find out about local services or you may even win something!
