After a Crime
After a Crime, life is different . . .
crime leaves us all at a loss - whether through injury, financial loss, or the emotional aftermath. No one expects to be victimized, and after the initial shock and disbelief, you may be left with a confusing array of feelings.
You may expect some or all of these reactions:
- Fear that your life will be threatened or that there may be a reoccurrence of the crime
- Guilt over thinking that somehow you might have prevented the crime. It is normal to question your own behavior, but remember that you are not to blame for what has happened
- Anger is a healthy response. It needs to be, and should be, expressed. Talking about what has happened can be helpful
- Grief over a loss, even personal property, that has value to you far beyond its replacement cost
- A sense of isolation from your family and friends who do not seem to know how to respond to you
