    POLLS OPEN 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., prevailing time.
  • November 14
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a candidate to file a verified election recount or contest petition concerning the results of the general election.
  • December 1: VOTER REGISTRATION OPENS
  • December 31
    End of annual reporting period for 2000

2000 ELECTION DATES

  • January 1
    First day an independent or minor party candidate may file a petition of nomination.
    First day a major party candidate for U.S. Senator or governor may file a petition to be placed on the primary election ballot.
  • January 19
    DEADLINE, by noon, for all candidate committees, legislative caucus committees, and political action committees to file annual reports for 1999. Postmarking by this date is no longer adequate; the report must be physically present in the office by this date and time.
    First day a declaration of candidacy for major party primary nomination, the presidential preference primary, or election as a school board member at the primary may be filed.
  • February 2
    First day the circuit court clerk (or Lake County election director) may receive absentee primary ballot applications from most voters.
  • February 18
    DEADLINE, by noon, to file or withdraw a declaration of candidacy for the primary.
  • March 1
    DEADLINE, by noon, for regular party committees to file 1999 annual reports.
  • March 18
    DEADLINE for a county election board to deliver absentee ballots to the circuit court clerk or the Lake County election director.
  • April 3
    First day a voter may vote an absentee primary ballot before an absentee voter board in the office of the circuit court clerk or Lake County election director.
  • April 3: VOTER REGISTRATION ENDS
    DEADLINE for a voter to register or to transfer registration in the county voter registration office.
  • April 7
    End of pre-primary campaign finance reporting period.
  • April 14
    DEADLINE, by noon, for primary candidates, all legislative caucus committees, all political action commit-tees, and all regular party committees to file pre-primary campaign finance reports. Postmarking by this date is no longer adequate; the report must be physically present in the office by this date and time.
  • April 20
    First day a confined voter, a voter caring for a confined person at a private residence, or a voter with disabilities may vote an absentee ballot before an absentee voter board at the voter's residence or place of confinement.
  • April 22
    Office of circuit court clerk or Lake County election director must be open for at least seven hours for absentee voting.
  • April 24
    DEADLINE, by midnight (except for confined voters or voters caring for a confined person requesting delivery of a ballot by an absentee board), for the circuit
    court clerk to receive mailed or facsimile transmitted absentee ballot applications.
  • April 24
    DEADLINE, by 10p.m., for Marion County Circuit Court Clerk to receive mailed absentee ballot applications from confined voters or voters caring for a confined person.
  • April 27
    DEADLINE, by 10 p.m., for Marion County Circuit Court Clerk to receive hand delivered or facsimile transmitted absentee ballot applications from confined voters or voters caring for a confined person.
  • April 29
    Office of circuit court clerk or Lake County election director must be open for at least seven hours for absentee voting.
  • May 1
    DEADLINE, by noon, for other circuit court clerks to receive mailed or hand delivered absentee ballot applications from confined voters or voters caring for a confined person who requests delivery of a ballot by an absentee board.
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a voter to vote an absentee ballot in the office of the circuit court clerk or Lake County election director.
    Last day a confined voter, a voter caring for a confined person, or a voter with disabilities may vote an absentee ballot before an absentee voter board at the voter's place of confinement.
  • MAY 2: PRIMARY ELECTION DAY
    POLLS OPEN 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., prevailing time.
  • May 16: VOTER REGISTRATION OPENS
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a candidate to file a verified election recount or contest petition concerning the results of a primary election.
  • June 6:
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a major political party caucus to fill a vacancy on the general election ballot for a federal. state, state legislative, or judicial office resulting from a primary ballot vacancy.
  • July 17
    DEADLINE, by noon, for filing petition of nomination for an independent or minor party candidate.
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a candidate nominated at the primary election to withdraw.
  • July 26
    First day to file a declaration of candidacy for a school board, member chosen at the general election.
  • August 1
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a major political party caucus to fill a vacancy on the general election ballot for a local office resulting from a primary ballot vacancy.
    DEADLINE, by noon, for filing a petition to place an independent or minor party candidate on the ballot or for an independent or minor party candidate to withdraw.
  • August 4
    DEADLINE, by noon, for filing a certificate stating that a vacancy on the general election ballot resulting from a vacancy on the primary ballot has been filled.
  • August 9
    First day the circuit court clerk or the Lake County election director may receive absentee ballot applications from most voters.
    First day to file a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate at the general election.
  • August 25
    DEADLINE, by noon, for a declaration of candidacy for election as a school board member at the general election to be filed.
  • September 18
    DEADLINE, by noon, to file or withdraw a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate at the general election.
  • September 28
    DEADLINE for the county election board to mail general election absentee ballots to voters who have already filed an application with the circuit court clerk or the Lake County election director.
  • October 9
    First day that a voter may vote an absentee general election ballot before an absentee voter board in the office of the circuit court clerk or Lake County election director. (if the office is open despite the Columbus Day state holiday)
  • October 10: VOTER REGISTRATION ENDS
    DEADLINE for a voter to register or to transfer registration in the county voter registration office.
  • October 13
    End of pre-election campaign finance reporting period.
  • October 20
    DEADLINE, by noon, for all general election candidates, legislative caucus committees, political action committees, and regular party committees to file pre-election campaign finance reports. Postmarking by this date is no longer adequate; the report must be physically present in the office by this date and time.
  • October 26
    First day a confined voter, a voter ' caring for a confined person at a private residence, or a voter with disabilities may vote an absentee ballot before an absentee voter board at the voter's residence or place of confinement.
