Operation Division

The operation division of the Steuben County Sheriff Department consists of 13 deputies. Lt. Tim Troyer a 10 year veteran of the Sheriff Department is the operation division commander. There are three shift supervisors who hold the rank of Sergeant and two who hold the rank of Corporal. There are 13 deputies who work 8.5 hour shifts providing extensive coverage to the citizens of Steuben County.

Several members of the department have had extensive specialized training. This training includes:

  • 10 S.W.A.T. trained deputies
  • 5 Advanced S.W.A.T. trained deputies
  • 10 Intoxilyzer Operators
  • 3 Certified firearms Instructors
  • 8 Field Training Officers
  • 3 Certified Dog Handlers
  • 2 Certified A Scuba
  • 1 Certified Accident Reconstructionist
  • 2 Standard Field Sobriety Test Instructors
  • 1 Defensive Tactics Instructor
  • 2 EVOC instructors
  • 1 Less than Lethal Instructors

Patrol Division

The primary responsibility of the Steuben County Sheriff Department is to patrol the roads and highways in the unincorporated areas of Steuben County. The patrol division also acts as a visual deterrent to crime because of high visibility in the rural areas of the county.

Other responsibilities consist of conducting investigations, completing necessary reports and serving Warrants and Civil papers from the three courts in Steuben County.

Steuben Counties population is just over 30,000  full time residents and populates to over 100,000 people in the summer months, Steuben County is known for its 101 lakes. The Steuben County Sheriff Department answered over 19,000 calls for service in 1999.

Special Note: The Steuben County Sheriff Department has been honored with the Indiana Sheriff's Associations Deputy of the year for 1999 and 2000.
