About your Sheriff, Joel A. Working |

Joel Working was born and raised in Allen County, Indiana. After serving over 28 years with the Allen County Sheriff Department, he was elected in November 1998 as Sheriff of Steuben County, Indiana, where he has lived since 1985. As Sheriff of Steuben County, working leads a department with over 50 members and a 2.5 million dollar budget. After becoming sheriff, Working immediately began fulfilling campaign pledges by reconstructing the department. Giving it better command flow and giving it checks and balances As Sheriff, Joel Working has greatly improved Media relations and has become very proactive in the community as a whole. Sheriff Working knows that as a community with 101 lakes and a population that rises to over 100,000 in the summer months, it is necessary for all of Law Enforcement in the county to work together and has taken steps to improve relationships in this area. As Sheriff Joel has reconstructed and revitalized the reserve organization under the leadership of Captain Jeff Sine. Working has also begun working very closely with Judges, Probation and the various school systems in the community. Sheriff Working started his career in 1970 with Allen County Sheriff Department. He worked almost 2 years in the jail, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He then moved to the traffic division and was later assigned to a multi-agency Criminal Intelligence unit. In late 1974, early 1975 he helped develop the new vice and Narcotics unit, supervising the second shift. In late 1977 he was transferred to the Criminal Investigation division. While in that division he helped start the Ft. Wayne & Allen County Crime Stoppers. In 1988, Working was promoted to Lieutenant of Civil Division and later to the rank of Captain of Civil and Warrants divisions. Working also served an 11-month period as a temporary Commander of the Allen County Jail. Sheriff Working is a 1979 graduate of the F.B.I. academy.
