Underwater Rescue & Recovery Team

The team consists of divers from the following Departments:

  1. Steuben County Sheriff's Department

  2. Area Fire Departments

  3. Locally based Conservation Officers

The team was organized in 1998 due to Angola Fire being the only certified dive team in the county and a shortage of divers. Funding was obtained through donations from the community and money from the Steuben County Community Foundation to get divers certified as Rescue Divers. The team is activated for emergency rescue and recoveries and has also trained for underwater evidence searches.

Training: The team members are required to complete and pass a rigorous annual swim test and at least 1 training dive a month to keep divers trained to dive in all conditions.

The dive team currently has approximately 25 divers and numerous other fire department personnel and Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol trained in surface support. There are team members in almost every area of the county which helps for information gathering and quicker rescue/recovery times.
